Yeah. ☺

123Escoffier November 6, 2011 at 6:51 am One interesting thing I find is that in the blue state UMC, the (married) women with children mostly stay home with them and mostly both hubby and wifey want it that way. HOWEVER there is also a cultural expectation that she get the fancy education, including a professional/graduate degree, AND put in a few years on the career ladder before she gives all that up for domesticity. The Gilded Age notion of just sending your princesses to finishing school and then marrying them off by 20 or so is so out of date it’s not even a relic. So is the more recent notion of sending girls to Vassar or Wellesley and marrying them off by 24. First of all, the character of those schools is wholly different. But second, UMC parents want their girls to go to the same competetive schools where the boys are, not so they can find husbands, but just because … because, I guess, not to would be to admit that they’re somehow “lesser” than a boy, which is intolerable. And they want their girls to go beyond undergrad, get an advanced degree, and take up a prestigious career.
